From the Copilot's Seat - 2015/02
It is Thanksgiving Day as I write this, and looking at the past year I am thankful for many things. Family is a given because they are my family. Without them I would be a mere shell. They are supportive in my AMA efforts allowing me many hours of separation each year to do the organization’s work. I am thankful for my many friends, colleagues, and members, and their support of me this past year!

Relationships count! We certainly appreciate the EAA lending the support of its 180,000 members in its response to the FAA’s Interpretive Rule. EAA called for the FAA follow the plainly intended spirit and intent of Public Law 112-95, Sec 336(a), and refrain from imposing any regulations on operators of model aircraft or the model aircraft themselves, even if those regulations otherwise apply to “all aircraft.” Thank you, EAA!

This is my first opportunity to weigh in about the FAA’s interpretation of the “Special Rule for Model Aircraft,” established by Congress as part of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012.

In my last column, I discussed the AMA’s marketing and what we have to offer. Much of the marketing is done at the grassroots level. To further that discussion, the heart of promoting model aviation lies with our clubs and members.

AMA Marketing is a broad topic that encompasses several areas. How can we market ourselves to the rest of the world, and become a household brand name? How do we grow our membership, which increases our revenue for member programs, internal operations, insurance costs, and savings?
