GETTING STARTED IN one of the
branches of Old-Time (OT) modeling is fairly
straightforward and not unlike getting started
in any other specialized activity. Find and join
an active organization, start hanging out with
the members, collect some reading material,
decide where you’d like to begin, and just do
it.

Storing balsa
GOOD BALSA WOOD, our most basic
building material, is often sought after,
treasured, hoarded, and saved for years.
Balsa is renowned for its light weight and
workability, but the lighter “contest”
grades are increasingly expensive and hard
to come by.

BUILDING A MODEL from a kit or
scratch-building from a set of plans has its
own unique rewards. While reporting to no
one, you single-handedly become the
management consultant for feasibility studies,

The 2009 SAM Champs
THE 2009 SAM (Society of Antique
Modelers) Championships was flown in
September on the dry lake in Boulder City,
Nevada. The site has almost unlimited and
unobstructed space for FF models and a
flat surface for safely following them on a
chase bike. The RC competitors enjoy a
spacious landing area, which they are
required to land inside to complete a score.
