IT’S CHRISTMASTIME AGAIN! It’s
time to really think about the new radio, kit,
plans, books, tools, or other items you just
can’t do without. It’s the time of year to leave
the catalogs out with items marked that you
want for Christmas. Our spouses usually want
to keep us happy and can find the time to
make a trip to the local hobby shop or use the
plastic and an 800 number to order the items
we want or need.
Three Generations of Scale Modelers
Pa Pa Ramon A. Torres, as most of us
grew to know him, started modeling
airplanes in 1933 at the age of 10. He
made nonflying models from cigar boxes.
Young Ramon grew up with several kids
who became modelers and later selected
careers in the field of full-scale aviation in
their native Cuba. Ramon had wanted to
join his friends in this field, but parental
pressure and influence prompted him to
enter the field of electronics.
2002 Scale Masters
This year’s Scale Masters
Championships, held October 9-
13, moved from the Northwest to
the southwestern region of the
country. Sunny southern Arizona
is a beautiful place to hold a
modeling event in October, with
sunny skies and low humidity.
The Superstition Air Park in
Mesa is the site for some of the
best aeromodeling in the
country. The Arizona Model
Aviators served as the host club,
and they have a paved runway and covered
pit area that helps make any visit to this site
enjoyable.

THE CENTENNIAL of powered flight is
here. Could it have been 100 years ago? From
the Wright Flyer to the modern RPVs
(Remotely Piloted Vehicles), space flight, and
stealth aircraft of today, “We’ve come a long
way, baby.”
RADIO CONTROL SCALE - 2003/01
in 2003 The first indoor Radio Control
(RC) Scale National Championships will take
place using AMA Sport Scale rules including
documentation and flight requirements. To be
held at the Neville Island Sports Center golf
dome, the primary difference between
outdoor RC and this event is a weight limit of
20 ounces and a wing-loading limit of 2.5
ounces per square foot of wing area.
Hosted by the Greater Pittsburgh Aero
Radio Control Society, the event will take
place August 15-17. Static judging will take
place the first evening, and flying will be
during the following two days.
This is a new event for an exploding
segment of our hobby. Indoor events have
been taking off across the country in the past
two years. Scale modelers have seen a large
increase in this activity. Many of the smaller,
older plans sets for Free Flight (FF) or
Control Line (CL) Scale with spans of 50
inches or less are prime candidates for this
activity.
