Jay Smith: How did you get involved with model aviation?
Steve Helms: My modeling career began in the fall of 1958 with my father when I was 10 years old. In those days we built almost everything including some of the radio equipment. Our first model was a Sterling Piper Tri Pacer single-channel model with a tube receiver and rubber-powered escapements. The transmitter was a ground-based Gyro transmitter with 5 watts of power output and a three-section, 9-foot antenna.

In the 1940s, Curtiss-Wright employed 918 brave and bright young women who were trained during World War II to design airplanes and assist with their construction. They were known as the Curtiss-Wright Cadettes.

JS: How did you become involved with model aviation?
JP: As a toddler, my aunt/babysitter would take me on afternoon strolls to Tex Foster’s hobby shop in Richmond Hills, Queens, New York. There, I would gaze in awe at all the wondrous flying creations hanging from the ceiling.

The original 39.5-inch Precision Aerobatics Addiction caught my attention when it was released, thanks to its thoughtful design and attractive color scheme, combined with its capable flight characteristics. Add to that the fact that it was available in green, my favorite color, sealed the deal and I became the happy owner of a PA aircraft.
