It’s exciting when I receive information from clubs about themselves and their activities. Such is the case with the Cape May County Wireless Aircraft Sport Pilots (WASP) Inc. club in Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Club Secretary Mark Senior sent me the following.

Each year, on January 1, several members of WASP get together for what we call Numb Thumbs. We all try to make a flight regardless of the weather. WASP provides coffee from Wawa and cream and jelly donuts from Chester’s Pastry Pantry Bakery in Somers Point, New Jersey. Suzzie, our club member Hank Hearon’s daughter, provides hot chili and Italian bread and butter. Part of the reason for the great turnout is that we have several new young members who fly all winter long.

The Cape May County WASP club was formed in 1987 and has operated in Cape May County ever since. The club’s mission is to “provide a safe and convenient environment for people within our county to pursue the sport/hobby of flying radio control aircraft and helicopters.”

The club has monthly meetings that are held on the third Thursday evening of the month at the Dennis Township Recreation Center in Cape May Court House during the winter months, and at the club’s field for the remainder of the year. The club actively seeks members who have an interest in flying model aircraft. WASP has participating members from ages 8 to 90, so age isn’t a limit. Of course, the club offers free instruction to interested adults and children to learn and enjoy the sport!

WASP hosts annual fun-flys in January and June at its field. The club also participates in the Cape May County Library’s Builder’s Day and the National Night Out in Middle Township, New Jersey, as well as the Northeast Electric Aircraft Technology (NEAT) Fair in Downsville, New York, and Joe Nall Week in Woodruff, South Carolina! The club also sponsors an annual Toys for Tots fun-fly in October for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

The WASP field in Cape May County is near Exit 17, southbound off of the Garden State Parkway at 127 Main Street. You can also set your GPS to 39.17263, -74.74081. As Mark says, “If the gate’s open, come on in.”

We salute the involvement of WASP. Remember, it’s not about what you fly, it’s about the friends you make.
