HONORING RICH HANSON: A LIFETIME OF LEADERSHIP

AFTER DECADES of remarkable service, AMA President Rich Hanson has retired, marking the end of a truly defining chapter in our organization’s history. Few individuals have had as profound an impact on model aviation as Rich, whose leadership, advocacy, and unwavering commitment have guided AMA through times of tremendous change.
Within AMA, Rich’s journey has been one of steady dedication and service. Throughout the years, he has worn many hats, including those of the District X vice president, the head of Government Affairs, and, ultimately, the AMA president. Along the way, his contributions have been recognized with many of AMA’s highest honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Distinguished Service Award, the Meritorious Service Award, and the Fellowship Award, our organization’s most prestigious recognition for exceptional and sustained contributions. In 2013, he was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to a lifetime devoted to advancing our hobby and community.
Rich’s leadership came at a time when model aviation was evolving rapidly. As drone technology emerged and new regulations began reshaping the sky, he became one of our most trusted and respected advocates. Representing AMA before Congress and the FAA, Rich served on numerous Aviation Rulemaking Committees and UAS workgroups, ensuring that the voices of model aviation enthusiasts were not just heard but also respected. His calm professionalism and deep knowledge earned the trust of regulators and lawmakers alike. Through his steady advocacy, Rich helped others appreciate our community’s strong safety record, educational value, and spirit of innovation.
On a personal note, Rich has been a mentor to me throughout my 10 years at AMA. He helped me navigate the often complex legislative and regulatory landscape and continued to support me in my role as the executive director. I’ve seen firsthand his thoughtful leadership, his ability to build consensus, and his passion for protecting the future of model aviation. He’s always been someone I could turn to for perspective, guidance, or just a good conversation about the values that make AMA so special.
No one has left a deeper mark on this organization than Rich. His leadership has strengthened AMA, his advocacy has advanced the field of aviation, and his mentorship has inspired countless individuals, me included. As Rich embarks on this next chapter, he leaves behind an AMA that is stronger, more resilient, and ready for the future.
