District X Associate Vice Presidents Gil Terzo and Barry Mattison participated in a unique military and first responders show October 24-27, 2024.
MCON, created by veterans, is the only annual event dedicated to celebrating military culture. It aims to create community, facilitate connections, and improve the well-being of veterans and their families. Months of planning went into Gil and Barry’s involvement, where they aimed to create a museum-like exhibit with warbird and first-responder aircraft. It was the first time that AMA and three Las Vegas clubs had participated, with assistance from AMA staff.
On setup day, the displays were organized in the World Market Center’s Expo Hall, one of Las Vegas’ largest venues. With help from fellow veterans from the Nevada Department of Wildlife (where Barry volunteers), the setup took nearly an entire day.
Three local clubs participated: the Propnuts of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Soaring Club (LVSC), and the Las Vegas RC Club, and the event was supported by AMA. Barry and Gil appreciated the help from LVSC member Dan Valdes, who brought his FPV MQ-9 and F-22 setups.
In all, six large aircraft were displayed. Gil contributed two turbine aircraft, the L-38 and F9F Panther, along with his F4 and P-51 Mustang. Barry displayed a replica of Mercy Air’s Bell 222 (N220LN), which he later flew in the auditorium, as well as a Maxford kit-built Wright Flyer.
Gil and Barry engaged hundreds of attendees, distributed club and AMA materials, and discussed the aircraft, local clubs, and how to join AMA. The show organizers were generous, providing free space (valued at more than $10,000), meals, and additional stanchions for display protection.
This was the second year that MCON hosted the show, with more than 200 sponsors and representation from all military branches and services for veterans and first responders.
Gil and Barry look forward to an even bigger event next year, with plans to include hands-on flight training and an RC simulator. More details about the show are available at https://mcon.live.
