“NOSTALGIC” SEMI UPDATE

WELCOME BACK. As I finished this column, we were heading into the fall/winter build season. It is my favorite time of year for sure! I hope that you all have something on your workbench. If not, and you are considering a car, truck, or semi as your project, I sincerely hope you choose a Tamiya kit. Every time I build one, it is almost therapeutic. Other than the finish work that might require the paint and/or decal application, most of the builds are nuts, bolts, and screws. The instructions, fit, and finish are second-to-none, and there is a skill level for any builder and a price point for almost any budget.
As promised in my last column, here is a reveal of my 1/14-scale Tamiya semi build. I will admit that I procrastinated with completing this project, knowing that finishing it would require some fine cosmetic touches that are not my strong suit. However, my want to recreate an RC project from my childhood memory of a tanker semi from my parents’ gas and oil business won out and I forged ahead.
I took my time with the finish work and even added a Tamiya Multi-Function Control Unit. This will deliver sound, vibration, myriad LED lights, and a servo-controlled trailer coupler. The wiring did seem a little overwhelming at first. To aid in simplifying the hookups and final control of the semi, I went with a preprogrammed Flysky radio and receiver combo from Bob at Hobby Concepts.

After I verified the correct operation of the motor, three-speed shifting transmission, and servo throws, it was time for some serious wire management. With the chassis in order, I spent some time stowing wires from all of the cab and body LED lights. Before long, the body was mounted, and it was ready for its debut.
I could not be more pleased with the finished product. There is no doubt that the custom graphics solidified the memory I was recreating. I am proud to show all of

“I read your article in Model Aviation requesting info regarding nostalgia RC projects. Here are a couple of photos you might find interesting.
“The first picture was taken by my mom, circa 1960. I was 14 years old. The model is a Control Line VECO Warrior powered by a Fox .25.
“Picture two was taken by my wife in 2020, 60 years later. I found an original kit, but this time, it was powered with an O.S. .20. I did my best to replicate the original paint job. (It turned out better.)
