1989 NATS: I received a last-minute report from Sandy Frank, the Free Flight representative who functions with the Nats Management Committee, who indicates that a stake has been driven to establish the 1989 edition of the week-long, unified AMA Nats. The '89 Nats is to be held in the Tri-Cities area of Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland up in the extreme southeastern corner of the State of Washington. The dates are July 15-23, and the following pertinent information with regard to the Free Flight portion should be of interest to prospective attendees. The selected Outdoor Free Flight locale is a gently rolling desert of open space one mile by two miles surrounded by a mile or so of overflight area, all contained by an interstate highway, a mountain, and some scattered housing. It is about 15 minutes from anywhere in the Tri-Cities complex.

KITS: By the time this column sees print we shall have had our Christmas goose with all of the trimmings and be fast at work laying out our two usual after-the-holidays strategies, namely, our new year's diet plan and our new year's building plan. It's time to decide what new models we'll have to build in order to get ourselves prepared for the coming outdoor spring flying season. Whereas nibbling on balsa scraps may not be a recommended method of adding fiber to one's diet, one of the three new kit offerings by Campbell Custom Kits may aid in solving the problem of the winter building project.

1991 AMA FF NATIONALS. The NFFS proposed last October that the Free Flight portion of the 1991 AMA Nationals be held in the third week of June at Lawrenceville, Illinois. The AMA Executive Council confirmed the date late in January. I, for one, surely do hope we can eventually get to the point of planning for these annual get-togethers early enough to allow a year of lead time. It would be helpful and a lot less frustrating for all concerned.

NFFS NEWS: The month of June looms as a busy one for the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) with a June 1-4 kickoff at the University of Tennessee Minidome (116-ft. ceiling) in Johnson City, TN with their annual U.S. Indoor Championships. There will be 20 official events and a host of unofficial ones as well. Area hotel and dormitory facilities are excellent. Indoor buffs can send a No. 10 SASE to USIC, 1655 Revere Dr., Brookfield, WI 53005 for an informative, three-page contest packet and begin to plan their vacations accordingly.

NFFS NEWS: Apparently the green light is now burning brightly for both the Indoor and Outdoor Free Flight portions of the AMA Nationals to be relinquished to the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) in 1990. The plan is for the Indoor portion to be married with the traditional U.S. Indoor Champs at the fine facilities at Johnson City, TN on June 7-10, and the Outdoor FF portion to be separated from the July 14-22 RC and CL Nats activities by being delayed until the third week of October at Lawrenceville, IL.
