THE 1991 PYLON RACING season is off and running at full tilt. Wow, what a year we are in for. For you Formula One fliers who have been waiting for a new engine (the last ST X40 was made in 1985) the new Nelson engine is out. This engine is built just for us-the Formula One pilots. And wow, first reports show that it was worth waiting for. For you advanced Quickie 500 fliers, the new Nelson Q 500 engine is just fantastic. More on this in the next issue.
'92 NMPRA's Formula I Championship Race
The 1992 National Midget Pylon Racing Association's Formula One Championships was held at the Crows Landing, California, Naval Auxiliary Landing Facility on October 24-25. Forty-six pilots from across North America, including two from Canada, came to compete in the most demanding Formula One event of the year. Only those who qualify are invited to compete in this race. Fliers must finish in the top 20% in their district, finish in the top 10 at the AMA Nationals (or in the top three at the Canadian Nats), be a previous winner, or be an NMPRA officer.

BOY, THIS season went by fast for me. I lost some good friends this year - Hubert Wills (from Texas), Matt Smith, Monty Moncrief, and John Brodbeck (of K&B). I remember John helping me get my K&B engine running at the Oshkosh Nationals. It seems as though he was always around with the orange K&B truck to help out the racers. The latest loss was a friend of mine and a friend to Pylon Racing - Jim Shinohara. FLASH-FLASH-FLASH: For you Formula I fliers, we have another engine to use. This engine is being built by Dub Jett. For those of you just getting started, and who do not know who Dub Jett is: He is our current FAI (Formula I) World Champion and winner of the last two AMA Nationals. This engine is available and legal now, as I write this column. With Dub's extensive engine building I am sure this will be a very good engine. I already have one in my plane.

TIME REALLY FLIES when you're having fun! I can't believe that we're already at the end of another summer of great racing. Next up will be the Q-500 (Editor's note: That's Quickie 500) championships in Houston, Texas, and the Formula One Championships in Crows Landing, California. Look for a full report on these meets in future issues. Also, there will be a new Quickie 500 engine for 1993. I will report on this in the near future.
